Forged from 5160, dressed in Gemsbok Horn, G10 & Brass

Elegant, rugged, and full of old-world character, this Scagel-influenced hunting knife is a striking custom fixed blade built for both field use and admiration.

The blade is forged from 5160 carbon steel and shaped in a classic drop-point / slight clip-point profile, giving it the versatility needed for slicing, detail work, and general hunting tasks. The visible quench line adds depth and character to the blade, while the hand-forged finish keeps the piece grounded in true handmade craftsmanship.

The handle is a bold, traditional combination of polished Gemsbok horn, G10, and brass. The dark horn gives the knife a rich, natural authority, while the brass guard and spacers bring warmth, contrast, and a premium heritage feel. In hand, it has the kind of balance and presence that makes it feel like a proper working hunter from another era.

The knife is paired with a custom-fitted leather sheath in a deep reddish-brown tone, finished with carefully stamped geometric tooling along the edge. It is practical, durable, and beautifully matched to the knife’s bespoke personality.

What “Scagel” means

A Scagel-style knife is a knife influenced by the work of William Wales Scagel, an early 20th-century American maker from Fruitport, Michigan, who is widely regarded as one of the foundational pioneers of modern custom knifemaking. His knives became famous for their handmade character, flowing lines, carbon-steel hunting patterns, and distinctive use of natural materials and spacers in the handle. Scagel’s style was so influential that it helped shape the look of classic custom hunting knives for generations that followed.

This knife is Scagel-inspired, not because it copies one exact historical model, but because it carries that same spirit: a practical carbon-steel hunter, strong natural handle materials, warm brass accents, and a handmade look that feels timeless rather than modern.

Some knives feel modern. Others feel inherited.

This one belongs to the second category.

With its flowing blade, horn handle, and brass detail, this knife carries the soul of an older tradition — the kind of hunting knife that looks like it could have ridden on a belt through generations of veld, camp, and hard-earned experience. The Gemsbok horn brings natural texture and African identity, while the brass and G10 spacers add just enough refinement to lift it into the realm of a true custom piece.

The result is a knife that feels both rugged and distinguished: built to work, but made with the kind of detail that invites a second look every time it is drawn.

This is not just a tool. It is a hunter with heritage in its lines.
