CUB - A Compact Wolhuter-Inspired Ranger Knife (5160 | Brass | Matumi Burl)
CUB - A Compact Wolhuter-Inspired Ranger Knife (5160 | Brass | Matumi Burl)
A smaller, quicker take on the classic ranger profile - Cub is our compact homage to the Wolhuter-style “lion knife” tradition: practical, no-nonsense, and built for the bush.
Heritage (verified):
The original Wolhuter sheath knife and lion skin are documented as being on display at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park’s Stevenson-Hamilton heritage collection.
Workshop legend (inspired story):
In our shop, we call this one Cub because it’s the younger brother of the Lion - the knife you reach for when you want the same spirit, just lighter on the belt. The tale goes that an old hand once said: “A big blade is for big problems. But a small blade is the one you carry every day.” So Cub was built to live on a hip from first light to last tracks - fast in the hand, tough in the steel, and handsome in the wood.
Materials that matter:
Forged from 5160 spring steel for dependable toughness, finished with a brass bolster for balance and a classic field look, and capped with Matumi burl - dense, durable Southern African hardwood with character in every grain line.
